 Hello! My name is Katie Carbery, founder and owner of travel aboards, located in Scottsdale, AZ! 

Iโ€™m originally from St. Louis, MO, and moved to the desert with my husband, and 18 year old pup 

in October 2020. A change of pace, scenery, and lifestyle was what we were looking for; plus, itโ€™s the 

perfect retirement spot for Mickey! 

 

Travel, foodโ€ฆcooking, and hospitality are my greatest passions, and I am happy to share part of myself with you! I come from a family of chefs and restauranteurs, dating back to 1911 when my maternal great-grandparents opened a restaurant in St. Louis. Growing up, my dad owned several restaurants, and I can remember the days I'd stay home from school so I could go to work with him.  Bussing tables in second grade was way better than waiting for recess!

 As I got older, I told myself I didn't want to be in the industry because I saw the sides of it that arenโ€™t glamorized on tv shows and movies. I decided I wanted something else, so I went to college where started learning there was much more to see than the city I was born and raised in. I took myself on my first international trip with a travel group:  35 days in Europe! That experience opened my eyes and spoke to my soul.  I was hooked! 

I knew deep down that I couldnโ€™t graduate without studying abroad, and chose one of 

the greatest places in the world: Thailand. Why Thailand? It was the furthest place from St. Louis, 

and I had to get out of my comfort zone! Yes, just like nearly every person who studies abroad says: 

it changed me, for the better! While there, I studied International Marketing, ate some of the best food 

Iโ€™ve ever had, traveled throughout the Land of Smiles, and neighboring SE Asian countries.

I graduated college with a BA in Advertising and Marketing Communications, then went on to work in event planning, travel and tourism, sales, and marketingโ€ฆnone of which were right for me. For nearly 10 years I had jobs that werenโ€™t what I wanted, but thought it was what I was supposed to do. I then realized what Iโ€™m supposed to do is listen to myself, not others or society. I put my ego aside, and went back to the restaurant business where I found that working in hospitality was where I belonged.

At that point I was married, and even though I knew I was on the right path, I also knew I needed to stretch my wings and fly. My husband and I decided that getting out of St. Louis was what we both needed, and after one visit to AZ I knew this is where I wanted to be. We moved from the nest, and shortly after I had the idea for travel aboards. 


My intention is to make charcuterie different, break the rules, if you will. 

Since I missed travel so much due to COVID, I thought I couldnโ€™t be the only one. 

I figured, if you canโ€™t get to the destination, I'll bring a taste to your fingertips! 

I was also set on wanting to bring people together, and I knew the best way to do that was through food. 

Since launching, Iโ€™ve expanded from countries to domestic cities, and boards to cups to tables! 

Iโ€™ve also added options in case you donโ€™t have a destination in mind: 

staycations (meat + cheese + veggie), a favorites theme, holidays, and special occasions!

I've traveled to 17 countries and 18 states within the US, and am looking forward to exploring more of the Southwest and West Coast! I have an eye for design and presentation, I believe that eating with multiple senses is an experience unlike any other, and I follow the seasons to provide the most nutrition and flavor. My values are integrated in everything that I do, I aim to support local/small business as much as I can, and will do my best to accommodate dietary restrictions or preferences. I look forward to working with you, and hope to satisfy all of your senses with charcuterie!
